Is Involvement in the Fight Against the Persecution of Christians Solely for the Benefit of Christians?by Dr. Thomas Schirrmacher
Why Involvement in the Cause of Religious Freedom Should be a Central Political Issue for Everybody The following lecture was given at the Church of the Cross (Kreuzkirche) in Dresden on June 6, 2007, at the annual meeting of the Dresden EAK of the Christian Democratic Union1 in commemoration of the Augsburg Confession of June 6, 1530.

Religious Liberty:

Religious Liberty Trends 2007-2008
This WEA RLC annual Religious Liberty Trends posting will focus on two global trends: 1) apostasy, apostaphobia, and postmodernism; 2) the New Cold War. Most localised trends, tensions, repressions and "hot" conflicts are actually expressions or symptoms of these two global trends.

Uzbekistan: Hot Winter for Christians
Among the former Soviet countries of the Central Asian region, Uzbekistan is a persecution hotspot for evangelical Christians and other religious minorities in the predominantly Muslim country. The Uzbek authorities pursue a policy of continuing restrictions and persecution aimed at eliminating any missionary activity in the country. They want to keep all the religious life of their citizens under their control.

Chad: Islamic Jihadist Coup Poses Major Threat
Chad's current president, Idriss Deby, a former military colonel of the Sudan-based, Libyan-backed Patriotic Salvation Movement, seized power in 1990 in a military coup, ostensibly to advance democracy. He is of the eastern Zagawa tribe which straddles the Chad-Darfur border and is now facing genocide at the hands of Khartoum's Arabist Islamist regime. While Chad is officially a democratic, secular state with religious liberty, Deby's regime is repressive, dictatorial, tribalist and corrupt. Human rights are frequently violated.

Kazakhstan: Religious Freedom Under Attack
The churches in Kazakhstan continue to grow and the number of converts from both the ethnic and Russian population continues to increase. However, Protestant Christians are still a religious minority in Kazakhstan. Most of the ethnic population historically consider Sunni Islam to be the only true religion for ethnic Kazakhs, while the majority of the Russians living in Kazakhstan relate to the Russian Orthodox Church.

Algeria: The Crackdown Begins
In Algeria, a horrific civil war (the State v Islamists) has claimed more than 150,000 lives since 1992. That conflict has now been taken over by Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. But by God's providence, just as Islamic terror has been causing multitudes of Algerians to become disillusioned with Islam, Christian radio, satellite TV and video/DVD ministries in Arabic and indigenous languages have become increasingly accessible. Today there are an estimated 70,000 Christians in Algeria.
